IELTS Paper Based Exam (PB) and Computer Based Exam (CB)
The reading, writing and listening, section are to be attempted on the examination paper itself in the paper-based IELTS test. In this case, the speaking test will be executed by a trained IELTS examiner through a face-to-face interview.
Computer-based IELTS has the reading, listening and writing sections take place on a computer. The speaking test takes place face-to-face with IELTS examiners. The examination completes on the same day for both paper and computer-based formats. The speaking section may be completed up to one week after or before the other tests.
Difference between Paper-Based and Computer-Based IELTS
Several aspects are worth considering if the candidate examines the difference between paper-based and computer-based IELTS formats. Have a closer look:
An answer sheet and a pencil for writing will be provided with Paper-based IELTS. The candidates are supposed to write answers on this sheet within the stipulated time. In computer-based IELTS tests, they are instructed to type answers in their respective boxes on the screen. A pencil or a pen and some paper will still be provided for making notes in this format as well. The computer test is customized for those with basic typing abilities.
The computer-based version begins with listening, followed by reading and writing tests like the paper-based IELTS examination. The speaking test is conducted on the same day before or after the computer-based examination.
In paper-based IELTS format, the candidate will be writing answers in a question booklet while hearing the recording. They will be provided 10 minutes at the close of the listening section for transferring answers to the official answer sheet. While in a computer-based format, the candidate will be typing answers in suitable boxes on the screen. They will be provided time between the section for exploring answers without any extra time at the conclusion.
Paper-based IELTS examinations are mostly organized in bigger rooms, sometimes at educational institutions and universities, hotels, and centrally located establishments. Computer-based IELTS tests are usually done in smaller rooms and custom-tailored. Everything is designed accordingly in these testing rooms for maximum comfort.
Everybody appearing for IELTS on the computer is going to get their machine, headphones for taking the listening section, a high-quality display unit, and brand-new rooms for testing. They do not have to talk to the device so the microphone will not obstruct performance. Most of the centres offer noise-cancelling headphones to enable better emphasis on self-performance.
